Journey Beyond Plans $5 Million-Plus Refurbishment of Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef

Journey Beyond has announced it will invest more than $5 million (AUD) in a refurbishment of its eco-luxury camp Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef, with the 16-tent property scheduled to reopen in late March 2027.
The project will include new wilderness tents with private ensuite bathrooms, redesigned interiors, a refreshed reception area and upgrades to the property’s central sundeck, lounge and dining areas. The plans also call for an all-inclusive open bar and new furniture and soft furnishings.
Sal Salis is located among the dunes of Cape Range National Park, with direct beach access to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Reef.
“The new look and feel remains true to the natural beauty of Sal Salis, with a refurbishment that is sensitive to the environment and designed to sit harmoniously within its surroundings,” Journey Beyond CEO Chris Tallent said. “We’ve focused on the details that matter to our guests, while keeping the barefoot luxury that makes Sal Salis so unique.”
Global architecture and design firm Woods Bagot is leading the design. The firm has previously worked with Journey Beyond on its Aurora and Australis Suites for the company’s rail operations.
Woods Bagot Director Rosina Di Maria said the design draws its colors and materials from the surrounding coastline, landscape and marine environment. Plans call for teak, reclaimed jarrah, metalwork, woven rope details and other materials selected in part for their ability to weather naturally in the coastal environment.
The refurbishment also includes changes to the property’s food and beverage program, with a focus on seasonal produce, Western Australian wines and regional beers.
Sal Salis offers guided activities including sunrise walks through Cape Range National Park and snorkeling along the Ningaloo coastline. Kayaks and stand-up paddleboards are available at the camp, while whale shark and humpback whale swims can be arranged separately.
Bookings are open for the property’s 2027 season.
